This year I read the book The
Boy In The Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. Even though this book was
very sad, I really enjoyed reading it. This book is told based on the life of
Bruno and his new friend Shmuel. Bruno is the young son of a Nazi soldier, and
Shmuel is a young Jewish boy in the Holocaust. Since Bruno is so young he
doesn't know much about what is going on at this time. He often refers to the
Jews as "farmers." This is interesting how John Boyne wrote this book
because you get to read this story from a whole different perspective. Usually
Holocaust stories are told from the perspective of an older Jew who survived
the Holocaust, like Elie Wiesel in the book Night, but it was very
smart of John to mix it up a little bit.
I think every teacher should have this book available for students to
read because not only is it an easier book to read, it gives the reader
knowledge on what it was like to be a Jew during the Holocaust. Even though
this book is not a true story, it is based off of a tragic event in history. This
book is easy to get through because it is not very long, but I have to say this
is by far one of my favorite books I have read. John Boyne really makes the
reader feel like they are incorporated in the book because of his great
description and word choices in this novel.
