Bloomability By: Sharon Creech

In the book Bloomability, the setting changes a lot. Dinnie and her family have moved to a ton of different houses due to her father's job. But most of her homes have been in the United States until she moves to Switzerland with her aunt and uncle.
The majority of the book takes place in Lugano, Switzerland. This book takes place in the past, but the book doesn't state a specific date. I know that it is in the past because of the way the people dress, and the characters in this book do not have a lot of advanced technology. But, the year doesn't really affect anything with the book.
The setting plays, I think,  a very important role in the story. Dinnie has moved so many times and each time she moves, she gets quieter and more shy. But, when she moves to Switzerland she starts to open up a little bit. The affect that the setting has on the book isn't really based on time, but place. Dinnie starts to act a little more outgoing in Switzerland then any where else she has been.
In the main setting of the book, Switzerland, Dinnie has to adjust to multiple things. Many people there know very little english or none at all, the climate is very different, and she has to adjust to a new school.  Dinnie said,"We were deep in the foothills of the Alps, Uncle Max said, in the southern base of Switzerland." (page 21). This quote describes where the location is. To me, it sounds like a place in the middle of no where, very lonely. I feel that she has to adjust to this new location because the other places she has been have been very loud and very city like.
Dinnie is still trying to adapt to all of her new surroundings. But, I think that she will make the best of her experience here in Switzerland. I think that she will grow to love Switzerland and start to think of it more as a home.

  1. I really enjoyed your blog! I liked how you stated your opinion on how the setting played a role in your book. I also liked how you figured out the setting took place in the past by using clues displayed throughout the book. Keep up the good work!

  2. I agree with Mackenzie. This book makes you see how setting does not always need to be a physical (place, and you write very well about it. You have good insights into the character. It sounds like an interesting book.
