The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

I just started reading The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks last week. Its a really interesting book with how the format is laid out.
This book takes place in New Bern, North Carolina, 1946. It is based on an old man, Noah Calhoun who was in love with this woman, Allie Nelson, before she gets Alzheimer’s disease. He writes a book about their life and when he visits her in the home, he reads in to her hoping she will remember. The format of the book is mostly in the past when he reads the book to Allie. When it is present day, the location is at Creekside Extended Care Facility, a home for the ill. The setting plays a big part in the book. If the setting was changed the book wouldn't be the same. There would be no flashbacks and all the rich and poor people problems.
The most important place in the book would be the fair in New Bern, North Carolina because that is where Noah and Allie met and spent most of the summer together. "It was early October 1946, and Noah Calhoun watched the fading sun sink lower from the wrap-around porch of his plantation-style home."(pg. 6) This quote shows the years it is and where Noah lives. "He especially liked to look at the trees and their reflections in the river. North Carolina trees are beautiful in deep autumn: greens, yellows, reds, oranges, every shade in between. their dazzling colors grow with the sun,..."(pg. 6) This quote shows how the trees grow with the sun and how Noah loves watching them. It shows him having a nice and calm life style.
I rate this book a 10/10 so far because I love this author, Nicholas Sparks.

  1. I think you did a very good job writing this blog. It is hard to word a summary based on setting when there are flashbacks occuring left and right, but I think you pulled it off! Good job with getting the exact time periods and I think you chose very good quotes!!
